Drug Abuse Resistance Education The East Wenatchee Police Department was the first law enforcement agency in Douglas County to have the D.A.R.E. Program. D.A.R.E. is taught in the 5th grades for 1 hour a day for 17 weeks. Students learn about drugs, their effects and how to refuse them. Visitations are made to Kindergarten, First and Third grades. During this time, students are taught about stranger danger, drugs and their uses. These visits are 20 to 30 minutes in length over 4 to 5 weeks. The success of the D.A.R.E. program has been overwhelming. D.A.R.E. has grown from 10 officers in Los Angeles to almost every state in the Union and several countries around the world. Canada is one of the newest countries to start D.A.R.E. D.A.R.E. is only one part in the efforts to stop the use of drugs by the youth of America. Parents must continue to stress that illegal drugs are no good. Parents must also take a look at their own actions. Actions speak louder than words. Children of parents who smoke are more likely to start smoking. For more
